How to Replace the HP Pavilion Keyboard

While laptop computers generally have very durable keyboards, it occasionally becomes necessary to replace one. Unfortunately, replacing the HP Keyboard in the HP Pavilion is not as simple as replacing a keyboard for a desktop computer, which can simply be thrown away. However, the keyboard for the Pavilion is designed to be a user-replaceable part, and with a little effort, you can replace the HP Pavilion Keyboard on your own if it becomes broken or dirty.

Turn the Pavilion completely off. If the power button glows, the computer is on standby; turn it on, then shut it down again. Remove the battery pack and place the Pavilion on a tabletop with the screen facing down.

Remove the three Phillips-head screws from the empty battery compartment of the Pavilion. These screws hold the keyboard to the body of the Pavilion.

Flip the Pavilion over, and open the screen hinge fully.

Move the keyboard gently toward the back of the Pavilion so that the locking tabs on the bottom of the keyboard come out from under the palm rest. Lift the HP Pavilion Keyboard out of the Pavilion until you can see the cable connecting the keyboard to the logic board.

Use your thumbnail to push the locking mechanism for the HP Pavilion Keyboard cable toward the back of the computer. With the cable unlocked, it can be freely removed from the connector. Set the old keyboard aside.

Hold the replacement HP Pavilion keyboard over the body of the computer so that the cable can reach the connector. Slide the cable into the connector as far as possible, and push the locking mechanism toward the palm rest. Place the keyboard into the HP Pavilion and push it toward the palm rest to engage the locking tabs.

Close the screen hinge, HP Keyboard Cover and flip the Pavilion over. Replace the three Phillips-head screws in the battery compartment.
