Smart cover for ipad 3

Hey guys, I would like some advice regarding to the ipad 3 smart cover auto lock feature. I didn't use the original cover and I used some sort like fabric type smart cover. And when I carry or hold my iPad while walking it doesn't attach to my iPad and the cover will somehow lock and unlock my iPad. My question here is... Does this will damage my iPad if it happens frequently? Or it only drains my battery life?
