The Way to Make a Fancy Dress?

I want to go to a Cosplay Costume party but I don’t have a fancy dress. Nor do i plan to buy a prom dress or evening gown. I want to make fancy dresses. Sewing a dress myself can help me get exactly what i want - in the perfect size and color. There are tons of dress patterns for me to choose. So I am curious of how to make a fancy dress for any occasion! Any advice?
